The distinctive yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us locate the footage.
Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared earlier today that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location of where the images originated was based on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
