Thousands Attend Opening Israeli Memorial Service After Hostage Remains Were Repatriated

As Michel Illouz gradually progressed through the crowds beneath the Mediterranean pines and tropical trees at the burial ground in Ra'anana, a city located approximately 20 kilometers north of Tel Aviv, he expressed gratitude to countless visitors as he could.

Previously he offered an welcoming message to the Israeli public to stand with his relatives in mourning his twenty-six-year-old son, Guy, whose remains had been repatriated from Gaza on Monday.

Overwhelming Response

Thousands responded the request. They lined the streets, followed the hearse carrying his remains, and arrived at the burial site in such significant numbers that the primary scheme to stage the memorial indoors had to be discarded.

Instead, the event was organized in the open air, accompanied by the chorus of avian melodies.

Important Moment

This represented the initial burial ceremony since the last two dozen captives were returned from Gaza, along with multiple remains. A further more than twenty of the dead prisoners are still unaccounted for, but at minimum this family now had a specific place to express sorrow and honor their son, according to close acquaintances.

Sorrowful Account

Guy Illouz, a performer and sound technician, had been shot in the back at the Nova music festival during the Hamas offensive on October 7, 2023. Prior to the incident, he had reached out to his father from a hiding place to share his affection; to bid farewell. He was taken hostage, and per those held with him, he eventually succumbed from his trauma due to inadequate care.

Loved One's Insight

A family friend of the Illouz family, Michelle, in her fifth decade, commented that it had been crucial to them that people attended today. The Illouz family members, including Guy's female relatives and brother, had practiced the mourning period, the extended period of mourning, after discovering of his passing in December of the previous year. But now that Guy was ultimately back with them, they desired "people around them again."

"This brings me comfort that you attended," said Michel. "This means everything to us."

Father's Tribute

He addressed his son. "My dear Guy," he said, using a affectionate nickname, "it's hard for me to envision the days ahead without you. They snatched you from me – they ended your life – they stole my being and took my sense of self and destroyed my spirit and heart."

"I've been left hollow since that senseless shooting by those vicious attackers when they seized you and instructed you to turn around, and then just discharged two unnecessary shots into your dorsal area."

Final Goodbye

"So I found myself this morning, driving to Abu Kabir medical examiner's office to confirm your identity and part ways. They removed the white sheet, and the initial sight I noticed was that familiar expression, that positive outlook, that serenity and dignity that so exemplified you."

"I reached out, tried to sense your aroma, caressed every bone in your body. I observed you, I was in private with you, and yes, I felt with complete conviction that it was you. Yes, I know, Guy-shuk, that you've rejoined our family. You've rejoined your family's embrace, to all your close associates, and to the countless people whose feelings your story touched."

Family Strength

In the early part of the ceremony, Illouz had focused entirely on supporting his junior family members. He gently touched the locks of his daughters, embraced his boy, demonstrated love and gathered his emotions for them. But then his feelings emerged.

Treasured Recollections

"I will yearn for so much journeying together through this land, experiencing your company, hearing your music, sitting in the hills and lighting the burner to create the drink the way only you understood – 'Dad, do you see the coffee foam? You have to heat it slowly, let the bubbles form, then boil it again. Agitate the liquid with rotating movements' – and then your smile while sipping the coffee and your pleasure in every individual sip."

"Earlier than my exit Abu Kabir today, I honored my word. I observed you, breathed you in one ultimate occasion, and yes, I kissed you on the forehead. I was could perceive your beauty even in the state in which you were repatriated."

Final Words

"Beloved child, I love you so much, I cherish you. I will yearn for you every second and tiny segment of my life. Be at ease, my beloved son, repose after a travel of 24 months through unexplored dimensions to us. I hold you dear, my Guy-shuk, my treasured initial offspring."
