The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part series written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last season concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details suggested.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
