The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a girl harboring several human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct personas, each with their own fears and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms where their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
