The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Documenting Two Dozen Days Behind Bars

The ex-president of France plans a book this autumn titled Notes from a Cell, which recounts the period endured in jail.

The announcement came shortly after the former president left prison as his appeal proceeds his conviction for unlawful coordination in a case to obtain election campaign funds linked to the leadership of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Personal Reflections

“In prison visibility is limited, and nothing to do,” he writes in an extract, suggesting the book is more about his thoughts from seclusion instead of wider commentary on the overcrowded and struggling jail system in France.

“Silence escapes me, which doesn’t exist at the prison, where one hears endless commotion,” he states. “The racket unfortunately never stops. Yet, similar to barren lands, one’s inner world grows stronger behind bars.”

Freedom Plea: Describing the Ordeal

While appealing for release, the former leader was present remotely from inside the facility, depicting prison life as exhausting. He stated to the judge: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, showing great humanity, and who helped make this ordeal bearable – as it truly is one.”

“It never crossed my mind at this stage of life, I’d be in prison. It’s a hardship that has been imposed on me. I confess it’s hard, extremely tough. It has an impact all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”

Historical Context

Sarkozy, who led the nation from 2007 to 2012, set a precedent as ex-leader from the EU and the first leader since WWII of France to be incarcerated.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he planned to utilize the opportunity for authoring a memoir.

Cell Library

It remains unclear whether he had time to read and critique the three books he brought with him: a life story of Jesus spanning two books and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the classic tale, where a blameless person is imprisoned later flees to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

He was held in isolation to protect him in a room approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom at La Santé prison in the city. Guards occupied a neighbouring cell.

Reports indicated his diet consisted just yogurt while inside due to concerns meals provided may have been contaminated. Options were available for self-catering yet he declined, as per accounts. Not known is whether Sarkozy will write about what he ate in prison.

Lawyer’s Statements

His attorney, Christophe Ingrain daily throughout the jail term, informed the court security would be better released rather than in custody. “He has faced death threats, listened to yells during nighttime plus rapid actions in an adjacent room when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Case Background

His incarceration began on 21 October when a Paris court imposed five years in prison on conspiracy charges related to a plan to secure campaign funds during his election campaign.

He disputes the charges challenging the decision, and another court case set for next spring.
