The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the influential style architect behind many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
