Slot Asserts He Feels Secure and Retains The Club's Backing Following PSV Loss
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it was natural for questions to be asked about his position following a further heavy loss versus the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their 9th defeat in twelve games, marking the team's worst streak since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were taken apart by the Dutch league champions on a difficult evening at Anfield.
“I feel secure, I am OK, I have got plenty of backing from the top,” the coach remarked.
“It would be nice to change things and get a victory of course but if you are coaching a team and struggling then it's typical that people question you.”
He noted, “I'm comfortable with my position. It is not the initial instance I’ve been in a tough spot but it is about time that we turned it around.”
Discussions with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to elaborate on his discussions with the club's leadership, the head coach revealed:
“We communicate frequently. They are helpful to the team and to me and we discuss these matters but they don’t call me all the time of the day to say they back me.”
He added, “In the normal discussions I sense the confidence. But I've not talked to them after this game yet so let’s see.”
Persistent Failings and Squad Reaction
Slot highlighted recurring failings from his squad in their European defeat, namely poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more direct in his assessment of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Honestly, I don’t. I'm telling that to everyone,” Jones said.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don't need to wait to think about it. I'm beyond feeling anger inside. I've reached the stage currently where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He went on, “It's difficult because I play for the team I support. I’m a fan, and I've watched this club all my life.”
“In a long, long time, I've not seen a Reds side enduring a phase such as this with results so bad.”
Jones finished, “However we still have the crest on our shirts. And as long as that badge is removed, we will always compete.”
“We’re going to try to bring this squad return to where it needs to be, show everyone again the values of this club and the reason it's called the top club in the planet.”
“However currently, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
