The artist has handed over the entirety of his £25,000 award winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to save the UK's small concert spaces.

The star was given the award on mid-October as his latest record People Watching was declared the outstanding release of the past year.

Fender has chosen to donate the funds to the trust, in recognition of the essential function local spots fulfilled in his early career.

"I personally would not have achieved what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the shows I did around the region, and further afield, when I was beginning," remarked Fender. "These venues are legendary, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these venues have ceased operations – roughly 16% of the total UK scene.

Recently, well-known musicians including Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by including a small levy to their ticket costs, which benefits smaller concert halls.

He also joined in, raising more than £100,000 on his recent tour to help 38 grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation helped venues that were dealing with potential shutdown due to challenges stemming from flooding, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and sound issues.

Some locations were granted funding support in modernizing facilities and gear that positively impacted musicians and concertgoers.

"The notion that funds from shows in major spaces helps the local stages, where it all starts for artists like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has said.

He is not the first artist to contribute his award funds to charitable organizations.

Back when they won the prize in 1996 for their record their work, vocalist Cocker announced that the act would give their prize money to the organization the charity.

During 2002, artist she split her award across a few good causes, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I donated a grand to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they required better apparatus," Ms Dynamite shared with a publication.

In recent years, Ezra Collective contributed their prize money to the local youth club that supported their act, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

And winners that year M People gave their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was found to have the disease.

"The victory was ample," remarked vocalist Heather Small. "The money was the bonus but we didn't need the extra, because we had the honor. So our victory touched another person's life."

In the past week, the MVT revealed it had saved two local spots in that region, by bringing them into local control.

One venue in that area and the other in that location were purchased under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is supported by a national body and enthusiasts who buy "ownership units" in the buildings.
