NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core issue, hesitated to declare this decision immediately after his triumph in November.

"The choice rested on the security of my family and the imperative to directing all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability the city's residents voted for," Mamdani said on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, it will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he added.

Campaign Controversy

During his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit although he is from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for official events, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his modest Astoria home.

Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, a policy where the city sets limits on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
