New Year Celebrants Told to Bundle Up with Snow Predicted Throughout the UK
Weather experts are saying an icy beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely across much of the UK. Revelers are advised to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Events Proceed In Spite of Warnings
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are expected to proceed, following last year's cancellation. This is in spite of advisories for snow over northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," stated the Met Office.
Celebrations Under Open but Frosty Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and clear skies. Temperatures are expected to be chilly, making extra layers a necessity, according to forecasters.
To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday
As we enter Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

- Delays and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.
The Mercury Forecast to Fall Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Public Health Alerts Issued
In addition, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this indicated the weather was expected to lead to major effects across the NHS and care systems. This includes a expected uptick in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
