Israelis have come together across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in Gaza.

The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel reacted by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our violent adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled official commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but events still took place around the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas incident was organized in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli broadcast stations.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to review the terms of the agreement.

A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an late session of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official stated the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not resume combat after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the talks are "challenging and have not yet produce any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are striving to reduce the gaps between the both parties.

Key Issues in Discussions

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
  • After-conflict governance of the territory

Citizen Reaction

In Tel Aviv's public square that day, young Hagar - whose sibling endured the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - shared: "No location appears as home any longer and until every captive return not a single person will feel safe."

"After we see all home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can commence rebuild," she concluded.

In front of the leader's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be living.

Activist one woman stated: "We must do every compromise needed for the captives to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."

Research now frequently demonstrate that about 70% of the population desire the war to conclude in exchange for the release of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the location of Nova festival, grieving people came together to honor the dead.

From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli shelling carried on.

In the main city, attacks were noted in the early hours of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"When the night falls, the fear appears with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my little child who puts his head on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will return to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had taken in the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the southern area.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city said additional victims had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the southern area, health workers said.
