Conservative responses to the partial release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the censorship procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt significant concerns about what may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater openness.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these files for months only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that preceded the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy folders of files that contained no previously unseen information.
