An extensive manufacturing zone situated on the outskirts of Jakarta is addressing radioactive pollution following an official taskforce found traces of the hazardous isotope Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing plants inside the site, which encompasses companies that export chilled marine products.

Emergency Measures and Goods Withdrawal

The finding has led to immediate decontamination efforts and the relocation of local inhabitants, following a similar pollution scare in the US that was linked to the Indonesian facilities.

An important multinational retailer is among the businesses that have withdrawn products from its stores following the discovery.

Investigation and Detection of Pollution

The country's authorities initiated an investigation after the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a shipment of frozen coated shrimp exported by an Indonesian firm.

Officials issued an advisory advising distributors and retailers to dispose of the product and not sell it, although the detected level was well under the authority's intervention threshold. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had detected would not present an immediate hazard to consumers.

The authority explained: “The primary impact on health of concern after longer term, ongoing small amount contact (eg through consumption of polluted products or water over time) is an increased chance of cancer, caused by harm to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Contamination and Medical Examinations

Radioactivity tests revealed at least 22 plants in the manufacturing area were contaminated. The Indonesian team did not identify the twenty-one additional production sites, but said they would immediately receive cleanup procedures carried out by the country's atomic energy agency.

A senior official declared that residents residing in strongly polluted zones would be moved until the location was decontaminated, adding that the well-being of the residents was the “top priority”.

Health authorities additionally performed examinations on local employees and people living near the industrial estate, identifying nine people who tested positive for contact to Caesium-137. They were referred to a hospital before being cleared to go back.

Cleanup and Containment Plans

The affected sites will immediately undergo decontamination procedures by the national nuclear agency. Authorities have further selected the area of a scrap metal plant as an containment facility for contaminated materials.

Indonesia, which has no nuclear energy facilities or weapons program, suspects that Caesium-137 may have entered the nation from abroad.

Origin of Contamination and Import Limits

An official representative told the media that recycled metal imports were the probable source of contamination and confirmed the authorities would immediately impose limits on metal waste arrivals. He said that vehicles were also being inspected for possible contamination as they traveled through the region.

About Caesium-137 and Public Risks

Caesium-137 is a hazardous nuclear element that usually enters the ecosystem as a consequence of atomic experiments or incidents, like the Fukushima disaster or Chernobyl. Small amounts are present in soil, food and air.

The amount found in the frozen prawns was far lower than FDA action levels, but the agency stated long-term contact to even low doses of caesium was linked to an elevated risk of cancer.
