Christantus Uche Sparks Comfortable Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their first-ever European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Missing key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding result that virtually guarantees them a place in the Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their next match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight entry to the last 16, especially following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for several Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were outmatched against a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Dominance Established from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
